Nuclear Mindset Nuclear Dump – 4th Bit

In this fourth bit of writing i explore something of the foundations modern 20th century anthropology in Australia, with the aim of seeking to deconstruct the notion of the ‘local descent group’.

This notion – the local descent group – is part of the statutory definition of ‘traditional Aboriginal owner’ in the Aboriginal Land Rights (NT) Act, and is playing a key role in providing legitimacy for the location of a nuclear waste repository at Muckaty, in the NT.

I look mainly at the role of anthropologist Radcliffe-Brown in comparison with Spencer and Gillen, in order to move on to the role of Stanner in Tennant Creek in Bit 5.
