New online network launched to protect Indigenous human rights

April 12, 2010

Australian Human Rights Commission:

A new website being launched today will bring together human rights advocates in an online network to share advice and best practice, and provide a one-stop-shop for information on international human rights treaties relating to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

Mick Gooda, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Social Justice Commissioner and member of the Steering Committee which has been overseeing development of the network, said the Indigenous Human Rights Network Australia (IHRNA) was a much-needed resource for Australians who advocate for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples’ human rights.

“IHRNA fills a void for those people in the community who are working away persistently, and often on their own, to ensure that the rights of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples are given the prominence they deserve in the development of laws, programs and policies in Australia,” Commissioner Gooda said.

“Now, with the touch of a keyboard, network members will be able to contact experts for advice or make connections with mentors and other human rights advocates to share information and best practice approaches to protecting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples’ human rights.

“We’ve just had the first anniversary of the federal government’s formal support of the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous People and I can’t think of a better way to help people bring the Declaration alive and give it real application, than by enabling them to jump on a website and get the information they need to put the Declaration into practice.”

Information on IHRNA and the Steering Committee members can be found on the IHRNA website at www.ihrna.info to find out more or watch www.youtube.com/user/ihrna

1 Apr 10: “On 12 April, the Senate will hold a public hearing in Darwin as part of its inquiry into the legislation that will lock-in Muckaty as the site for a national radioactive waste dump. There will be no hearing iin Tennant Creek, effectively SILENCING many Traditional Owners, who will be unable to travel to Darwin.

SHOW YOUR SUPPORT to the Muckaty Traditional Owners who have been opposing the plan to dump dangerous nuclear waste on their country since it was first proposed.”

Commissioner calls on all Australians to embrace the UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples

April 2, 2010

Australian Human Rights Commission:

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Social Justice Commissioner Mick Gooda, has called on all Australians to get behind the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples and use it to improve programs, policy and legislative development in Australia.

Speaking ahead of Saturday’s second anniversary of Australia’s formal support of the Declaration on 3 April last year, Commissioner Gooda said the Declaration was a practical tool for building mutual respect and forging genuine partnerships between Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples and state, territory and federal governments.

“The Declaration provides us with clear signposts to guide the protection of Indigenous peoples’ rights to land, culture, and the rights of Indigenous peoples to have a say in things that impact on our lives,” he said.

“The Declaration sets the standards we must all aspire to in order to ensure the survival, dignity and well-being of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

The Australian Human Rights Commission, with the support of the Christensen Fund and Oxfam Australia, will release a range of education materials on the Declaration later in the year.

Helen Caldicott – A Heresy is occurring in Australia

Muckaty Station sits above an ancient aquifer which is used by both the aborigines for drinking water and white station owners to water their cattle. It also experiences large intermittent rainfalls during the year.
Not only does the government intend to bury Australia’s low and high level waste at this site, but there is a distinct possibility that waste from overseas – namely the United States – will be transported by ship and on the Halliburton line to Muckaty Station, thus making Australia one of the main radioactive waste dumps in the world.

The reason for this eventuality is that Howard signed a treaty with the American government called the Global Nuclear Energy Partnership GNEP which stipulates that after Australia exports its large quantities of uranium to nuclear powered countries, the high-level radioactive waste would be re-imported to prevent lateral proliferation of nuclear weapons. Despite its previous promises, Labor has not vetoed the GNEP and there is a suspicion that a secret deal was negotiated under the aegis of the GNEP to relieve America of some of its deadly radioactive waste.

Long-lived carcinogenic isotopes will inevitably leak into underground water systems, bio-concentrate in food chains and over generations induce cancer, genetic disease and congenital deformities in humans, animals and plants. A dismal prospect indeed for Australia’s future.

Funding appeal: Support needed for Muckaty Traditional Owners to attend Senate Inquiry.

Funding appeal: Support needed for Muckaty Traditional Owners to attend Senate Inquiry.

A public appeal is being launched to raise funds for Muckaty Traditional Owners to attend a Senate Inquiry hearing in Darwin on April 12.

The Legal and Constitutional Affairs Committee is considering the recently tabled National Radioactive Waste Management Bill 2010, which identifies an area in the Muckaty Land Trust as the only site to be initially considered for a radioactive waste dump.

The Senate Inquiry has decided it will not take evidence in Tennant Creek, despite the town being home to many Muckaty Traditional Owners and concerned community members.

“Traditional Owners, Tennant residents and Barkly region pastoralists are extremely disappointed that the Senate Committee will not sit in Tennant Creek. The distance and cost to travel to Darwin makes it impossible for the majority of concerned people to attend the hearing,” said Natalie Wasley, Beyond Nuclear Initiative coordinator in Alice Springs.

“The Senate Committee offered to fund three people, but this does not allow for full representation from the affected family groups. Senior Muckaty people have asked me to appeal widely for financial help to allow more people to attend”.

‘This appeal reflects wide felt community outrage about how the people of Muckaty are being treated on this matter,” said Clive Rosewarne from the NT Branch of the Public Health Association of Australia. “This Senate Committee is charged with examining the procedural fairness of the proposed legislation; it is a cruel irony that the Committee is effectively proposing to deny many Muckaty people the opportunity to voice their concerns in person”.
