HREOC – Background Paper titled ‘Human Rights and Climate Change’.

April 8, 2008

HREOC
8 April 2008

The Human Rights and Equal Opportunity Commission has produced a Background Paper titled ‘Human Rights and Climate Change’.

Part I of this paper considers the human rights dimensions of climate change. Specifically, it looks at how the rights contained in the key international instruments are threatened by the impacts of climate change.

Part II then goes on to consider what obligations are imposed on Australia, in both international and domestic law, to respond to these threats.

Part III outlines how Australia may fulfil its human rights obligations, in the context of climate change responses; arguing that a human rights-based approach is the most effective way to respond to climate change.

ABC story "Billions needed to close Indigenous health gap: academic"

April 8, 2008

“A health economist says the Federal Government has no chance of closing the health gap between Indigenous and non-Indigenous Australians unless it spends hundreds of billions of dollars on the problem over the next 20 years.

Gavin Mooney from Curtin University says he estimates it will cost the Government $340 billion to bridge the gap.

The Government has so far committed just $260 million over four years.”

ACOSS Action Network – online survey

April 7, 2008

“Dear Action Network member

The ACOSS Action Network wants to hear from its supporters about ways to make Australia fair – just complete this 2 minute online survey -

http://www.surveymonkey.com/s.aspx?sm=3yPZn6sff1mfa95JQ%2bdNXn%2f6lUPUCpt9ZcJQEtrGDlA%3d

Last year Australia Fair members wrote to all Federal Parliamentarians to get their support for a national plan to tackle poverty and disadvantage in Australia. We welcome the announcement from the Government of a national social inclusion agenda with targets. Hundreds of people are gathering in Melbourne on the 9th and 10th of April to discuss the best ways for the social inclusion agenda to ensure a fair go for all.

Have your say on whos missing out on a fair go and what are the best targets for the government to set itself to increase fairness by completing the survey

We will ensure that your responses and ideas feed into the meeting this week and will be published on the website.

Regards,

Action Network”
